The Allman Brothers Band - Soulshine

It is famously known by the recording that Warren Haynes' band, The Allman Brothers Band, released on their 1994 album, Where It All Begins. Gregg Allman sang lead vocals. The song's title originates from Haynes's nickname, given by his father. Although the Allman's version was never released as a single, it still remains one of their best known songs among fans and concert-goers.

When Haynes and bassist Allen Woody formed Gov't Mule, they took the song with them. Gov't Mule performs the song live at their concerts and it was included on the band's Live... With a Little Help from Our Friends, The Deep End, Volume 1, and The Deepest End, Live in Concert releases.

A live version of the song, which appeared on the Allmans' 2003 DVD, Live at the Beacon Theatre, had Allman and Haynes alternating vocals on the verses and harmonizing on the chorus. This has been the standard for the song in most recent years with the dual vocals.

Duane Allman and Berry Oakley died as a result of motorcycle accidents three blocks away from each other, Duane on October 29, 1971, Barry on November 11, 1972. Oakley did not die there. He got up, went home and hung out with his friends. Three hours later he died from a brain hemorrhage. Both were 24. They are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia, where the band would often jam.

Lyrics

When you can't find the light,

That guides you on the cloudy days,

When the stars ain't shinin' bright,

You feel like you've lost you're way,

When those candle lights of home,

Burn so very far away,

Well you got to let your soul shine,

Just like my daddy used to say.

[Chorus:]

He used to say soulshine,

It's better than sunshine,

It's better than moonshine,

Damn sure better than rain.

Hey now people don't mind,

We all get this way sometime,

Got to let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

I grew up thinkin' that I had it made,

Gonna make it on my own.

Life can take the strongest man,

Make him feel so alone.

Now and then I feel a cold wind,

Blowin' through my achin' bones,

I think back to what my daddy said,

He said "Boy, in the darkness before the dawn:"

[Chorus:]

Let your soul shine,

It's better than sunshine,

It's better than moonshine,

Damn sure better than rain.

Yeah now people don't mind,

We all get this way sometimes,

Gotta let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

Sometimes a man can feel this emptiness,

Like a woman has robbed him of his very soul.

A woman too, God knows, she can feel like this.

And when your world seems cold, you got to let your spirit take control.

[Chorus:]

Let your soul shine,

It's better than sunshine,

It's better than moonshine,

Damn sure better than rain.

Lord now people don't mind,

We all get this way sometimes,

Gotta let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

Oh, it's better than sunshine,

It's better than moonshine,

Damn sure better than rain.

Yeah now people don't mind,

We all get this way sometimes,

Gotta let your soul shine, shine till the break of day
